Artificial intelligence (AI) is now increasingly being used in many healthcare applications. A promising new area is in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Prostate cancer, in particular, impacts many men, and determining its presence and extent can be challenging. However, a new AI tool developed by Avenda Health called Unfold AI can detect prostate cancer more accurately than human doctors.

How Unfold AI Works
Unfold AI uses an algorithm to visualize the likelihood of cancer based on different types of clinical data. This includes information from MRI scans, biopsy results, PSA levels, and Gleason scores.
The tool generates a 3D map of the prostate that highlights the precise location and extent of the cancer within the prostate. This provides a clear and detailed picture of the cancer, enabling doctors to better understand its spread and aggressiveness.
Key Features of Unfold AI
1. 3D Cancer Visualization
Unfold AI creates a detailed 3D map of prostate cancer, aiding in treatment planning and guidance.
2. High Accuracy
The tool demonstrated superior accuracy in detecting prostate cancer compared to traditional methods, with a 97% clinically proven sensitivity.
3. User-Friendly Interface
The tool provides a clear and intuitive platform for doctors to easily access and interpret AI-generated insights.
4. FDA Clearance
Unfold AI has received FDA clearance, ensuring its safety and effectiveness.
The UCLA Study
Researchers at UCLA tested Unfold AI on 50 cases where prostate tumours had been surgically removed. Seven urologists and three radiologists also analyzed these cases.
The AI was able to identify prostate cancer with 84% accuracy compared to 67% for doctors. It also had a 45 times lower chance of cancer cells remaining after removal.
Treatment Success With Unfold AI
Another study looked at Unfold AI’s ability to predict the success of focal therapy treatments. Focal therapies aim to destroy just the cancerous tissue without removing the entire prostate gland.
118 men received cryotherapy, and Unfold AI’s encapsulation confidence score was found to be the strongest predictor of treatment success over other factors like tumour size or grade. A confidence score above 0.7 meant a 70-80% chance the focal treatment eliminated all the cancer.
Positive Patient Outcomes
Prostate cancer patient Dr. Joshua Trachenberg was able to avoid invasive surgery thanks to Unfold AI. It enabled experimental focal ultrasound therapy by identifying precise margins to destroy his tumour without causing side effects. He is now cancer-free and encourages exploring less harmful alternatives to prostate removal.
Concluding Thoughts
Unfold AI shows that artificial intelligence can outperform humans in detecting prostate cancer. The AI tool has the power to improve outcomes while reducing overtreatment risks for prostate patients. As technology continues to advance, AI may transform how physicians defeat this widespread disease.
