Introducing PixelCascade128 v0.1
PixelCascade128 is based on the popular “Stable Cascade” architecture, the latest text-to-image AI model by Stability AI (the company behind Stable Diffusion). Where previous image generation models struggled to produce clean, grid-aligned pixel art, PixelCascade128 is designed specifically for this task. It leverages the power of diffusion models while incorporating techniques to encourage the generation of pixelated, retro-style artwork. The creator, Nerijs, claims it is much faster, smaller, and better overall than the previous Pixel Art XL LoRA model for SDXL he designed.

How to Use PixelCascade128 v0.1
Using PixelCascade128 is straightforward. Users can interact with it using ComfyUI or other diffusion UI’s text-to-image and image-to-image workflows. For the best results so far, inputs of 1024×1024 or 2048×2048 work well. Specific prompts around “pixel art” or file type hints can encourage the desired pixelated output.
Below are the direct download links to both workflows:
- Text-to-Image Workflow: txt2img.json
- Image-to-Image Workflow: img2img_upscale.json
Select the one that suits your needs. For img2img, make sure to use Stage A, B, and C files along with the effnet_encoder.
Tips from the Creator
Nerijs, the creator of PixelCascade128, provided some valuable tips for refining results in this early version:
- Use UNet diffusion and a CLIP strength of 0.7-1.0 for best quality
- Adding “white background” to prompts can remove unwanted backgrounds
- Downscaling the output 8x with nearest neighbours helps align pixels
- Stage C weights at 2048×2048 sometimes cause distortions; use Stage B instead
- The Euler+ sampler provides higher quality outputs than others tested so far
The Future of Pixel AI Art With PixelCascade128 v0.1
In this early v0.1 release, PixelCascade128 shows huge promise. While not perfectly pixel-precise in all cases, it is able to understand pixel art styles and resolutions in a way no other model has before. With further development, it has the potential to revolutionize digital art creation.
As an open-source model on HuggingFace, PixelCascade128 has the potential to be improved upon by many contributors. With feedback from early users and the application of new techniques in diffusion research, future versions could produce images of even higher resolution and pixel perfection.
Last But Not Least
Pixel art enthusiasts and digital artists now have an accessible starting point for experimenting with AI-generated pixelated styles. While not a replacement for human creative skills, PixelCascade128 v0.1 helps lower the barrier to participation in this retro art form. The release of models like this ensures AI will continue augmenting human creativity rather than replacing it. Thanks to creator Nerijs for providing us with this fantastic model!
