Former Military Officers Launch Swarmbotics to Develop Robot Swarms for Combat

Swarmbotics is an early-stage startup developing robot swarms to enhance intelligence and tactics on the battlefield. Founded by experts in robotics and military operations, the company seeks to develop coordinated groups of cheaper autonomous robots. The founders, Stephen Houghton and Drew Watson, founded Swarmbotics in 2023.

What are Robot Swarms?

Robot swarms refer to the collection of autonomous robots that can coordinate their actions. Swarmbotics is developing an ANTS (Attritable, Networked, Tactical Swarm) ecosystem of robot swarms.

Swarmbotics Founders

The founders, Stephen Houghton and Drew Watson, met while working at autonomous trucking startup Embark Trucks and decided to start Swarmbotics.

Houghton is a former Marine Corps officer who has worked with companies like Cruise and Amazon Web Services in leadership roles related to autonomous vehicles and robotics. Watson has a background in software engineering and led robotics projects at NASA and the CIA.

Obsession With Robot Swarms

The founders became obsessed with the potential of robot swarms after observing investments focused only on highly-capable individual robots. They felt this approach could more quickly deploy small, inexpensive robots compared to expensive autonomous systems.

Swarmbotics Products

Swarmbotics is developing two initial robot platforms: the Haul ANT autonomous ATV and the smaller 60-pound Fire ANT robot. They can take any payload. These are configurable platforms intended to work cooperatively in swarms for military applications like intelligence, surveillance, logistics, electronic warfare, and more.

Advantages of Robot Swarms

Cheaper robots allow the proliferation of hundreds or thousands rapidly compared to expensive systems. The goal is for the swarm robots to autonomously coordinate behaviours through software. This could provide tactical advantages compared to standalone systems for tasks like battlefield surveillance and logistics support.

Funding and Future Plans

Swarmbotics has raised $4 million to develop the initial systems. The focus is on demonstrating the technology to the Department of Defense and integrating more advanced autonomy software.

In the long run, the company also intends to commercialize the swarm robotics platforms for non-military applications. This startup is pioneering the application of swarm robotics, which could significantly impact how automated systems are deployed for defence.
