Say goodbye to the familiar Google Assistant, folks. Google just announced it’s officially sunsetting the tool in favor of its newer, AI-powered Gemini. In a blog post this week, Google stated they’ll be upgrading most mobile users from Assistant to Gemini over the coming months. Later this year, the classic Assistant will be “no longer accessible on most mobile devices.”
If you’ve got a newer phone with updated software, chances are you’ll be making the jump to Gemini. According to 9to5 Google, Assistant will only stick around on older phones running Android 9 or earlier with limited RAM. This move isn’t a huge surprise, as Google’s been nudging users towards Gemini for a while now, even pulling Assistant from its main search app recently. It’s not just phones either – tablets, car systems, and even headphones are all slated for the Gemini upgrade.
“We’re also bringing a new experience, powered by Gemini, to home devices like speakers, displays and TVs,” Google added, promising more details soon. So, while Google Assistant has been a helpful voice for years, it seems its time is up. Get ready for the age of Gemini.
