Finally, A Humanoid Robot With A Natural Walking Gait

Recently, Chinese robotics startup EngineAI launched its newest humanoid creation, the SE01 robot. What sets this robot apart is its uniquely human-like walking style. While other humanoids often walk in an awkward, robot-like manner, SE01 walks smoothly and fluidly like a human. Let’s get into its key features!

EngineAI SE01 Humanoid Robot

EngineAI designed the robot with versatile functionality in mind. Its legs swing naturally, with flexing knees and smooth transitions between steps. Watching it walk, one would be hard-pressed to distinguish it from a human. The SE01’s combination of advanced mechanics, powerful processing and versatile functionality make it incredibly well-rounded for collaborative tasks alongside humans. With its human-like movement abilities, the SE01 represents the future of embodied AI assistants.

How SE01 Achieves Human-Like Walk

This human-like gait is made possible through EngineAI’s self-developed “harmonic joint modules”. Each leg features multiple joints that work together seamlessly. Additionally, the company trained the robot’s neural network using reinforcement and imitation learning. This allows the SE01 to refine its gait based on sensory feedback continuously. The result is a walk that is lifelike, energy efficient and capable of a wide range of speeds and terrains.

Key Features of EngineAI SE01 Humanoid Robot

1. Physical Attributes

At 1.6 meters tall and weighing 55 kilograms, the SE01 has a size and build conducive to performing various human-scale tasks.

2. Range of Motion

Its 32 degrees of freedom allow an unprecedented range of motion compared to earlier robots with more segmented movements.

3. Leg Dexterity

Each leg contains 6 degrees of freedom across the hip, knee and ankle joints, endowing the SE01 with the dexterity to smoothly navigate varied environments.

4. Strength

With a maximum joint torque of 330 Newton meters across its single-leg joints, the SE01 shows off serious lifting capabilities.

5. Modularity

A versatile, quick-release modular chest cavity facilitates the integration of different sensors and end-effectors for different applications.

6. Battery Life

Long-lasting lithium polymer batteries provide over two hours of continuous operation on a single charge.

7. Durability

An aerospace-grade aluminium alloy exoskeleton makes the SE01 robust enough for product assembly lines or construction sites.

8. Mobility

A maximum walking speed of 2 meters per second allows the robot to keep up with humans in various work contexts.

This well-rounded set of mechanical and electrical attributes forms the physical foundation enabling the SE01’s skilful, natural motions – the result of advanced AI programming under EngineAI.

What Will SE01 be Available

EngineAI plans to bring its full product line to market by late 2024. This will include industry-specific robots like the PM series for manufacturing. EngineAI also aims to increase annual SE01 production and sales to over 1000 units in 2025.

EngineAI’s Mission For Lifelike Robotics

Founded in 2023, ENGINEAI is dedicated to developing robots with ever closer similarities to humans. Their debut SE01 shows the potential when neural network technologies are applied to full-body movement optimization. As humanoids grow more responsive and fluid in their motions, new applications could emerge across sectors.
